FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How will this whole thing work?

  • EXCELLENT QUESTION!
    Several steps happen in sequence. Although, we are very flexible and pivot often.
  • MAKING A GREAT CHOICE.
    Once you’ve decided that we’re the right photographer for you, please email back a signed version of the Senior Photo Agreement. When your payment is received, you and your preferred date/time are locked in. Availability is on a first come first serve basis and slots are limited.
  • PLANNING THE WORK.
    We’ll review your responses to the “Get to Know You Better” questions (link to questions) and reach out via call or text to discuss ideas for times, dates, locations, and outfits.
  • WORKING THE PLAN.
    We will have one session and we’ll be able to cover 2-3 campus locations depending on weather and timing. This means 1.5-2 hours in the am or in the afternoon. You will have the option to add a session in the studio at a reduced rate. Your interests, the weather, and other variables will determine the time needed to create a comprehensive proof set.
  • VIEWING PROOFS.
    Within a week of your shoots, you will receive a link to view your proofs online. Proofs are the best images from your sessions and will include a watermark with the filename and number for tracking. They are not retouched.

  • SELECTING FINALS.
    You get to select your favorites by clicking the ❤️ next to the file. Anyone you allow viewing access to can also select their favorites. Once you’ve made your final selections, share them with us through the proof site, and we’ll begin retouching them.
  • YOUR FINAL IMAGES.
    Within a week, you will receive a link to view, download, and order prints of your Final retouched images online. Final image files have been retouched and watermark-free.
  • RECEIVING YOUR PRINTS.
    Your print will be delivered to your door via FedEx or UPS within a week or so of ordering.

How long will my photo shoot take?

  • Your photo session will last anywhere from 1.5-2 hours. This includes time for you to arrive at the studio or location, get settled, learn about the photo shoot process, touch up makeup and hair, change outfits, and shoot multiple sets. This is a highly collaborative process, and your input is crucial in creating wonderful images.

What do I wear?

  • Please bring clothing that you love and that is appropriate for your shoot. michael recommends that your attire be clean, in excellent condition, and well-fitted. It’s a good idea to bring at several options. We haven’t met a wardrobe yet that scared us. Solid natural colors, textures, and fabrics work best. Avoid “branded” clothing that displays company, university, or team names. If you see this photoshoot as an opportunity to update your wardrobe, treat yourself to a new outfit! Some folks love the idea of a photoshoot as an excuse to update their wardrobe. You can always use this opportunity to treat yourself to a new outfit.

Is hair and makeup provided?

  • Your session does not include hair and makeup services. michael places a strong emphasis on the face—eyes, lips, skin, and hair. It is recommended that you arrive at the studio with your hair styled as you prefer. Please bring along any makeup, hair care products, brushes, and combs that you use regularly, as these products are not available in the studio. If you would like us to schedule hair and makeup services for you, please let us know well enough in advance.

Do I own my final images?

  • You sure do! We like to put your photos into our portfolio as well.

Can I bring a parent, spouse, partner or friend with me to the photo shoot?

  • Yes, of course—whatever makes you most comfortable. We want to make your photoshoot easy and convenient. If you need to bring someone along, please do so. The studio is comfortable for anyone who may need to wait during your session. Please note that this shoot is all about you, so we will not be including others in your photos.

What do I do in case I have to reschedule?

  • Oh boy. Hopefully, we will have 100% participation. Emergencies and bad weather happen, but we are up against real deadlines and a tight schedule. If you cannot make your appointment, please contact michael as soon as possible at 814-880-2000. We will do our best to accommodate you.

Where is BLACK SUN studio?

  • BLACK SUN studio is located at 700 East Beaver Avenue, State College, PA 16801.  It is 1 block from the campus of Penn State University. Beaver Avenue runs parallel to College Avenue–which runs along the south side of campus.
